In this presentation, we will examine a host of brain imaging, behavioral, clinical, and academic data of Brazilian children with developmental dyslexia (DD). The overarching goal will be to analyze the characteristics of children with DD relative to their peers from the perspective of brain function and structure as well as academic and cognitive performance. The presentation will be based on data from eight years of a no-cost outpatient evaluation service that was part of a study of developmental dyslexia at the Brain Institute of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. We will also address the challenge of diagnosing developmental dyslexia in an academic setting where third graders who can’t fluently decode simple words are not an exception, they are practically the norm. We will discuss fMRI and MRI results from children with DD and from a longitudinal study that began in third grade and followed children until sixth grade. In addition to underscoring how the imaging and behavioral findings corroborate the existing literature on neurocognitive mechanisms of DD, we will incorporate a discussion of DD and its interaction with other traits, such as difficulties in math, differences in non-linguistic working memory spans, and automated measures of storytelling skills (graph theory).
Learning Objectives
Analyze the neurocognitive, behavioral, and academic characteristics of children with DD.
Integrate the discussion of DD with difficulties in math and with evaluations of executive function and academic performance.
Address the challenge of diagnosis in an environment where third graders who can’t fluently decode words are not an exception.
A closed support group has the same group members (up to 12) for a set number of sessions (8). Closed support groups are ideal for adults who are looking for deeper connections and more extensive peer support from group members. For the best support group experience, closed group members should plan on attending all 8 meetings in the series. This group offers a safe environment where Autistic adults can talk with like-minded people, share issues and concerns, and celebrate successes. Common topics include: disclosure, self-advocacy, and relationships.
Many kiddos (and adults) struggle with social and life skills. Join this session, in which we will demonstrate apps that can help with these skills. App focus will include: personal grooming, household chores, telling time, dialing 911, social skills, and more. Apps for various ages will be shown.
This workshop will be conducted using Zoom. After registering, you will receive an invitation to join the Zoom meeting.
Support Groups also called Share Groups are the backbone of FOCUS, the first program ever offered. Share Groups meet monthly (September to May) in several different locations around metro Atlanta so parents can meet other parents and share tips, fears, and joys. Parent volunteers facilitate the groups, keeping them positive, constructive, and uplifting.
Eligibility:
Be a parent/caregiver of a child/young adult with a physical and/or developmental disabilities, including rare genetic syndromes, cerebral palsy, autism, and Down syndrome.

This open group meets on the second Saturday of the month and is for individuals (ages 15-19) who are Autistic or who suspect they are. All AANE-facilitated support groups provide information, connection, and community where participants can share similar issues and concerns and celebrate successes. Groups are designed for the teens only – parents and other family members should not attend the groups.

This support group is for Autistic adults (18+) who are post k-12. Through this support group, members can connect with a variety of participants.
AANE support groups give members an opportunity to celebrate successes and support each other through difficulties. Common topics of discussion are:
Masking/camouflaging
Sensory sensitivities/overloads
Relationships
Self-care
Disclosure
This open group meets one Sunday a month and is for parents, family members, and friends of Autistic individuals. Guest speakers are hosted every other month.
